Dragon Punk

About the Sculpture

Dragon Punk was the second piece I created and really set the tempo for the next 20 pieces I designed and made. I got to see just how influential repurposed materials can be in setting the tone for design. I am often asked if I draw these designs out before I start building. The answer is no. I will often let the materials I find dictate how a particular sculpture morphs into existence. The Lawnmower Lamp, for instance, came about with me starting with a lawnmower blade and letting it inspired me to build a lamp with it. The Scorpion Punk came about with the finding of a piece of 1 inch rebar bent in the shape of a hook, and I immediately saw a scorpion tail. The rest was history. The other route I go is deciding for instance, I want to build a mandalorian speeder bike, and go in search of parts to design and build it. In a way drawings could be to restricting. You don’t want to stifle the creative spontaneous flow of design.
